Back in the summer of 1999, several members of the Lakes Area Community Concert Band were chatting
during a rehearsal break. They discussed a common love of swing music and how fun it would be to
play in such a group. Holly Frederichs made some phone calls and borrowed some music; and by
December of 1999, the Lakes Area Community Swing Band was born.
The swing band's first public performance was at Leisure Village the following April, and the band
has grown ever since.
Nine years later, the full 18-piece swing band now has over 160 charts in their books, their own
sound equipment, stands, and accessories. They play for weddings, anniversaries, private parties,
fund-raisers, and public events all over Lake and McHenry counties. They rehearse Monday nights at
Antioch High School at 9:00pm, after the concert band rehearsal is over. Some nights, they are
there as late as 11:00pm, simply for the love of swing music!
The Lakes Area Community Swing Band is strictly non-for-profit. Any any funds recieved go the purchase of new music, equipment, and most importantly, our scholarship fund which is awarded to school music departments and students studying music beyond high school.
The band still has many of its original members, and all musicians are volunteers: they play simply for the love and enjoyment of sharing this timeless music.
